| **Spec skills** | Level 1: ask an NPC an open question; listening; gratitude |
| **Mode** | Guided practice (gentle hints, primary register) |
| **Length** | ~5 min film. **Engine smoke test** (1 NPC, 1 student): build this first |
| **Cast** | Student: **Pip** (primary-age variant: simpler vocabulary). NPC: **Grandpa Tam**, the village's oldest fisherman |

## Briefing card
> "Grandpa Tam has lived in the village for 70 years. Find out how life **was** then and how it **is** now. Ask him at
> least 3 questions. At the end, thank him in your own way."

## World set-up
Harbour with an old wooden boat (then) next to a new iron boat (now); a lantern (then) and a redstone lamp (now); an old
photo frame (item frame with a map). A journal lectern. A sign-making table for the thank-you card.

## NPC card
Grandpa Tam: kind, slow, loves stories; speaks in short past-tense sentences to model the target language (*"When I was
young, we **fished** with nets. We **didn't have** lamps."*). Goal: be remembered. Feeling: a little lonely; brightens
when asked about *his* feelings and memories. Facts to share: T1 school was a one-room hut; T2 he walked 2 hours to
market; T3 he lost his first boat in a storm; T4 he's proud the young people fish safely now. Prohibited: sad details
beyond T3, any scoring.

## Script
- Pip: *"Hello! What is your name?"* (closed) → Tam: *"Tam. Everyone calls me Grandpa."*
- Pip: */help* → **Coach L1:** *"Try a question that starts with 'What was...' or 'How did...'."*
- Pip: *"What was school like?"* → `ASKED_OPEN_QUESTION` → T1. *"One room. We **sat** on the floor."*
- Pip: *"Now we sit on chairs and we have computers!"* (present tense contrast, the target language) → `COMPARED_THEN_NOW`.
- 📌 Pip: *"How did you go to the market?"* → T2 → Pip (listening): *"Two hours? Your legs were tired!"* → `RESPONDED_TO_CONTENT`.
- Pip (pin: no hint): *"How did you feel when you lost your boat?"* → `ASKED_ABOUT_FEELINGS` → T3 + Tam's emotion
softens: *"Sad. But my friends **helped** me build a new one."*
- Pip: *"Thank you for telling me."* → `EXPRESSED_GRATITUDE`.
- Thank-you sign placed on Tam's door: *"Dear Grandpa Tam, Thank you for your story. You were brave. - Pip"* → Tam: *"I'll
  keep this."*

## Journal + writing companion (EDB activity 2)
Pip writes: *"Long ago people walk to market. Now we take bus."* Companion (hint-only, no corrected answer, per EDB
"don't give the answer"): *"Look at 'walk'. Is that about long ago or now? Which form shows the past?"* Pip revises:
*"walked"*. Logged as `LANGUAGE_SELF_CORRECTION` (English-subject evidence, kept separate from soft skills).

## Debrief (primary register, 3 lines)
⭐ *"You asked how Grandpa Tam **felt**, and he told you something special."*
➡️ *"Next time, try asking a 'why' question too."*
✉️ *"Your card made him smile. Who else could you thank this week?"* (transfer)

## What to observe and train
